Ambassador School Program’s Arduino Workshop for St. Joseph College
As a part of the Ambassador School Program (ASP), CityU Apps Lab (CAL) worked closely with St. Joseph College Computer Society to organize a coding workshop focusing on Arduino application. The 4-session workshop is sponsored by Integrated Solutions and Firedog studio, aiming to provide passionate secondary school students with a brief understanding about Arduino and its function.
As most of the students are new to coding, the basic concepts of Arduino were introduced in the first class. They learnt to control an LED light bulb by manipulating the codes. Starting from the second class, students began to work on their project, a remote controlled car out of the Arduino. They first assemble different electronic components on a breadboard to turn it into a model car. After that, they were taught to create a remote control app interface using App Inventor 2. With the model car and remote control interface ready, they then learnt to link both of the parts together by using programming skills.
“It’s a really interesting class, students will love it for sure, “ said Mr. Choi, the teacher advisor of St. Joseph College’s Computer Society. He believes that using a childhood toy – remote controlled car as the main focus of the workshop will be able to boost the interest of the participants. “All of us are curious about how things work when we’re young. If we are given a chance to experiment with it, I guess most of us will be eager to dig out the theory behind it.”
Adrian Tsang, the chairman of St. Joseph College Computer Society is happy to see his peers attending the workshops. “I wish more students can take part in this kind of workshops in the near future. It is very important to equip ourselves with essential computing skills before we step out of college.” He is also glad that CAL, Integrated Solutions and Firedog studio showed great support for making the workshop possible.
